Underwriting Director

Location - Bristol
Employment Type - Full Time - Permanent
Salary - Competitive Package

We are hiring for an experienced Underwriting Director to play a core part of our Underwriting leadership team, driving the development of Underwriting strategies, delivery of the group’s strategic plan, oversight of portfolio performance and ensure robust governance in line with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Form part of the Underwriting leadership team, contributing to strategy development, team leadership and wider department development
  • Monitor the market environment and relevant macroeconomic trends to inform Underwriting strategy
  • Lead the development and delivery of the overarching MGA commercial plan
  • Support the CUO in strategy articulation to the board/executive/employees

Account Management:

  • Manage a portfolio of accounts, ensuring these trade to budgeted figures and achieve target profitability
  • Monitor underwriting performance metrics, such as loss ratios and retention rates, and initiate corrective actions as necessary.
  • Engage with key distribution partners, and maximise the value of existing and new relationships

Governance:

  • Take ownership of the Underwriting governance framework, and chair key governance forums
  • Ensure evolution of control processes keep pace with organisational developments
  • Manage Underwriting risk and compliance processes in accordance with agreed enterprise frameworks

Operational:

  • Develop robust process for oversight of company’s AR, claims and anti-fraud activity
  • Point person for external audits and regulatory communications
  • Manage the Underwriting operations team
  • Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve operational efficiency.

People Management:

  • Responsible for managing and developing the account management, UW operations and first line risk & compliance teams in accordance with companies process

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Quantitative mindset, with ability to get into technical detail where necessary
  • Deep knowledge of the Motor insurance market and it’s competitive dynamics
  • Strong people leader
  • Excellent organisational and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong communication skills, with ability to tailor content to different audiences
  • Competency across regulatory, risk and compliance dimensions
  • Familiarity with finance & budgeting processes
  • Education to degree level
  • Insurance qualifications (CII or IFoA) would be an advantage
